What Does TD Mean In Shoes & Sneakers?

When it comes to shoes, TD stands for “toddlers”. Therefore, the shoes labeled with TD are products designed and created for children of the 1 – 3 age range.

Be it shoes or sneakers, they have been manufactured with special features benefitting the little users because the undeveloped foot structure doesn’t allow them to use adult footwear either.

Toddlers are learning to walk, hence the footwear mustn’t be unstable or heavy.

TD is not the only terminology used for children’s shoes. Let’s take a look at them so you won’t be startled when running into one!

  • PS = Preschool
  • GS = Grade School
  • I = Infants (2 – 12 months)

TDV Shoes (Toddler Velcro)

Velcro consists of two nylon straps that can attach if you press them firmly enough. The name might not be too popular, though it has always been part of various items like bags and clothes.

In TD shoes, velcro is a technology to secure the shoes to the baby’s feet and prevent them from being lost. When the shoes don’t slip off all the time, you can be sure that your baby is safe.

Another reason shoes with velcro straps are amazing for toddlers is they are not difficult to slip on and take off.

Compared to lacing, velcro straps don’t come with the risk of tripping either. You can also adjust them with ease and guide your baby to do it themselves.

TD, PS & GS Differences

Out of all the tags used for children’s footwear, TD shoes’ meaning is usually confused with PS and GS. However, it is necessary to know that they are quite different from one another!

For starters, PS means Preschool.

So, the shoes tagged with PS are meant for children who haven’t reached elementary school but have learned how to walk and run already. In a way, we can say these shoes are for kindergarteners.

On the other hand, GS is Gradeschool, which takes place when the baby is 5 – 10 years old. Therefore, it almost has nothing to do with TD and PS shoes regarding sizes.

TD Shoe Features

TD shoes are designed only for toddlers and thus they have features other shoe sizes don’t.

Design

The baby’s feet are not too developed in length and width yet, so they will resemble a square box. To accommodate, the shoes must have a similar shape.

Materials

Children’s skin is really sensitive, hence the upper usually uses high-quality cotton or synthesized fibers that are soft and breathable at the same time.

Rubber and plastic are fabrics we want to avoid!

Flexibility

The soles should be flexible with resistance to puncture, their cushioning can mold to the little feet and support them.

Breathability

Babies will get more and more active once they know how to walk, and you will need to give their feet more ventilation soon enough.

Fastening

Buckles, rip tapes, and most importantly velcro straps help you secure a precise fit as well as teach your child to adjust the shoes by themselves.

How To Measure Toddlers’ Feet?

First of all, toddlers grow very quickly. Hence, you should be prepared to measure their feet quite frequently.

  1. Place a large piece of paper on the ground and ask your baby to stand on it. If possible, ensure they stand straight against the wall for more accuracy.
  2. Draw the outline of their feet on the paper and find the distance between the heel and the longest toe.
  3. Use the brand’s size chart as the reference and choose the most suitable size for your child.

For better results, you can use our additional tips:

  • Do the steps above after your baby has played for long hours. The heat from activeness will make their feet grow a bit in size, and you would want the new shoes to embrace this change too.
  • If you are choosing winter footwear, remember to let them put on socks!
  • Measure both feet and go for the larger number, for there is no way to redeem if the shoes are too small for the feet, while you can still adjust the laces and the straps to tighten the fit a bit.
  • Don’t buy bigger shoes just because you think your baby will grow quickly enough to fit them! Half a size should be the limit here.
  • When changing to a new brand, use its size chart instead of assuming all brands follow the same standard.

Final Words

TD means “toddlers” in shoe sizes, which means they are made for toddlers only.

Besides the sizes exclusively for children at 1 – 3 years old, TD products come with features suitable for babies who are learning how to walk.

Remember to measure the size properly so you can make sure their feet develop properly!
